| How To Select A Suitable Credit Card |
If you are looking for a new credit card, what factors you will be considering? As a Credit Card
System consultant for a local bank, these are what I consider:
1) The most important factor will be, the credit card should be a free card for whole life. It
means I am not willing to pay the annual fee of the card. If the card will be charged annual fee,
I will always make sure the fee could be waived easily. Before I apply the card, I will inform
the bank officer my monthly average expenses. If the officer could give me confirmation that,
with that kind of monthly average expenses, I may ask for the waive easily, then the first factor
is passed.
When I say "could be waived easily", it includes considering how is the method to waive the
fee. May I just make a phone call? Or I need to send a letter to the card centre? For me, I will
only apply the card if I just need to make a phone call to ask for the waive. If the bank could
not accept my suggestion, I am sorry to say that I will turn to other card issuer.
2) Second factor to be considered is, how convenience for me to do the payment. The perfect
payment method will be paying through Internet Banking( fund transfer ). I won't go to the
banking hall, take a queueing number and wait for my turn to do the payment.
3) With my existing credit cards, I always want the statement date to be fell on two dates for
my conveniences of doing payment. And these two dates are half month apart. If the card
issuer could not provides me the suggested statement date, sorry, I will look for another card
issuer.
4) Does the card provides redemption points? From time to time, I got some free products
from card issuer through points redemption. Most of the free products are really quality
products. This is what a cash consumer can't get. This is one of the advantages using credit
card for buying anything which is affordable. That is why, if possible I always pay by credit
card even with a very small amount.
5) Some card issuer provides on-line services( Internet Banking ) of paying all kinds of utilities
bills.
As a credit cardholder, we should always make sure that, for every expenses we made through
the card, we are afford to pay it all before the payment due date to avoid paying the interest( in
Malaysia the interest is 18% per annum ).
